Our Purpose
The
Los Angeles County Bar Association makes this searchable
database available free to its members who are sole
practitioners and to firms in which all lawyers are
members. Our primary purpose is to assist members in
providing effective representation to their clients. We
believe lawyers will find this database most useful for
obtaining a variety of types of information about bench
officers. By using this site, however, members can also
obtain some limited information about specific
mediators, arbitrators, referees, law firms and
parties.
What is the Civil
Register?
This
database is derived from the Los Angeles Superior Court
Civil Register and contains data from 1997 to the present.
The Register includes
information about general and limited jurisdiction civil
cases from all districts, except cases filed in Van Nuys
(general jurisdiction) before January 8, 2001. For each
case filed, the Superior Court enters a brief
description of all documents filed as well as decisions
made and proceedings conducted by the Court. The
Register also contains a description of the type of case
as well as a list of the parties, law firms, referees,
mediators, and arbitrators used. Information about how a
judge rules on challenges, demurrers and motions is
entered as well as the number of trial days. The verdict
or judgment is generally not described.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS DATABASE OMITS CERTAIN CASES.
It does not include the following:
(1) Cases filed in Van Nuys (general jurisdiction) before January 8,
2001 and
(2) certain limited jurisdiction cases with case numbers that begin with
numerals.
(Example: 05C11111) These limited jurisdiction cases can be accessed
if you have the case number,
but will not appear in any other search results, i.e. party names, etc.
This
Site
Unlike
the on-line Superior Court Register maintained by the
Court which is only searchable by case number, this site
is searchable by any criteria. By using this site, one
can obtain information about the number of peremptory
challenges filed against a judge, the number of days the
judge spent in trial and information about how the judge
ruled on particular types of motions over a given period
of time. The documents themselves are not available
on-line and are only available from the Court or the
attorneys who prepared them.
